Is menstrual masking a good idea?

Menstrual Masking is a new challenge making the rounds on social media, but is it a good idea? For those wondering what exactly this masking is, it’s the practice of taking one’s menstrual fluid and using it as a face mask. The idea is to make your skin softer and more brilliant. This newest fad is finding certain popularity with some of the more radical females despite its certain “ick” factor. Therefore, it must be clearly stated that menstruation is normal and not inherently vulgar, except for certain juvenile attitudes.

This surprising tendency is attracting more and more web surfers. Menstrual masking is a homemade beauty mask that is reported to be good for your skin.

Every week there are numerous challenges that pollute social media. Surfers are in love with them, except that many challenges are not always the wisest thing to do. In fact, many of them can be dangerous to your health. Menstrual Masking is proof that fun does not necessarily mean it’s based on common sense. Needless to say, this newest trend has already gained 3.5 million views.

Luminous and softer skin is the goal.

To justify the benefits of menstrual masking, (whose hashtag #periodbloodfacemask is repeated all over social media) Internet users explain that period blood has stem cells and all the nutrients that a baby needs. Certainly, if it’s good for a baby, then it’s good for your body too.

A homemade mask, therefore, has many benefits, states several adherents of the “menstrual masking changed my skin” movement. One female claims that her skin became visibly more luminous, her very first time applying her period blood to her face.

This homemade treatment is also seen as a way for fans of this challenge to reclaim their femininity. Several users have said that “It is no longer necessary to be ashamed of our blood” or even “there is nothing disgusting in using it.” It’s a very sanguine form of female empowerment!

Contaminated blood can provoke skin problems.

“The uterus is a relatively sterile environment however, the blood from menstruation is not. It contains cellular debris, mucus, dead blood cells, bacteria, and other microbes which it has collected on its passage through your genital tract. Even the blood itself is an inflammatory compound, especially your white blood cells which will irritate your skin and can provoke rashing,” warned, in a video addressing this trend, Dr. Karan Rajan, a British doctor, and surgeon.

Despite the perceived benefits of menstrual masking, coating your face in period blood probably isn’t a very smart thing to do.

Dr. Rajan also made it clear that “menstrual blood does NOT contain stem cells” as it’s being promoted. Only a fertilized egg or fetus has stem cells, so for the statement to be true, the “menstrual discharge” would actually have to be a miscarriage.

In the end, blood can be easily contaminated by microbes such as viruses or bacteria and this can lead to an infection.
